ATTENTION ALL WESTONKA YOUTH BASEBALL PLAYERS
Welcome to the Whitehawk Youth Baseball Association (WYBA). The information below is for
prospective baseball players in a competitive summer, “traveling” league.
Enclosed with this letter is the 2011 WYBA Registration form for youth ages 13- 16 (age as of April
30, 2011) or grades 7-10 to play on traveling teams this summer. This program is separate from the 7th, 8th,
9th and 10th grade school teams although players on the WYBA teams typically play school baseball if they
are not involved in a different spring sport. Likewise, one of the goals of WYBA baseball is to help develop
players for the high school varsity program. WYBA will sponsor a 16-year old team if a sufficient number of
players register at that level.
The number of teams at each age level and the team roster will be determined by the number of
players registered. If we have enough players for 2 or more teams at one level, try-outs will be held to
determine the best placement for each player on a team. Our goal is to place every player at a level which is
fun, positive and competitive for them and consistent with their abilities. Every player who has a positive
attitude and desire to play baseball will be placed on a team provided that coaches can be found for that
team. “Try-outs” will not be used to eliminate any player as long as there are coaches available.
WYBA sponsored six teams last year and our goal is to sponsor at least six teams again this year.
Each WYBA team will be registered to compete in either the Metro Baseball League, the Crow River
League, or, possibly, a third league. WYBA tries to place each of its teams in leagues in which they can be
competitive while still playing teams from geographically convenient cities and suburbs.
WYBA coaches are volunteers and are essential to the success of our program. Volunteers are
currently needed to serve as head and assistant coaches at all age levels. Interested parents are encouraged to
volunteer.
The teams will play an 11-16 game regular season schedule. In addition, WYBA teams often
compete in weekend tournaments. Teams can qualify for state championship tournaments in July by
performing well in tournaments, by doing well in their leagues, or by applying for and receiving an at large
bid.
It is up to the players, coaches and parents of each team to decide if they want to play in tournaments.
WYBA will pay the registration fees (but not the spectator admission, travel, lodging, meals, etc.) for each
team to play in up to two tournaments and, if they qualify, the state championship tournament.
The 2011 Registration Fee for WYBA play is $290.00 per player, which is non-refundable and is
intended to cover the following expenses for:
* League Registration fees and umpires * Field Maintenance fees
* Administrative/Publicity * Tournament Fees
* League Insurance * Umpire fees
* Equipment- balls, team bats, batting helmets
Uniforms for all 13 yr old players, new players and those who out-grew their uniform will be
additional costs of approximately $95.00 which includes jersey, pants and belt. Last year’s vest style uniform
will be used again this year. Detailed cost and an order form are attached will also be available on our
website soon. www.westonkabaseball.org
In Person registrations will be taken at MWHS on March 6 from 6:30pm-8:30pm and again on
March 8 from 6:30 pm-8:30pm in conjunction with our pre-season clinics. After March 8, a $50.00 late
fee will be added to the registration fee and the player will only be added if room allows. Uniforms orders
will also be taken at this time and will require payment directly to our vendor, Howling Wolf Embroidery. If
you are unable to attend the In-Person registration, please mail your forms with payment to Jill Schmidt,
4671 Bedford Rd, Mound, MN 55364 before March 8.
The WYBA board welcomes your input and encourages parent involvement. WYBA relies largely
on parents to serve as head coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, administrative board members,
umpires, and to assist with field preparation. If you are willing to assist in any of these roles or if you have
any questions regarding anything about WYBA matters please feel free to contact the board members as
listed below.
President Vicenta Hoffman
Past President Bill Sjoquist
Secretary and Registration / Uniform Coordinator Jill Schmidt
Treasurer and Scholarship Coordinator Kathy Erickson
Treasurer Elect Lori Anderson
Field Coordinator Pam Robinett
Umpire Coordinator Celeste Skaar
Fundraising Coordinator Lynn Brady
To contact a board member, please email westonkabaseball@gmail.com.
Fundraising Activities – In the past WYBA has funded equipment, field enhancements,
scholarships etc through registration fees. As costs increase we are finding it more difficult to
continue funding these activities. Again this year we have decided to embark upon
fundraising activities that will enable us to continue supporting the activities that enhance the
player’s baseball experience. We appreciate your support in making these activities a success.
Following the success of last year’s Twins tickets fundraiser, WYBA is again purchasing a
block of tickets for a single Twins game. Each player is asked to purchase 4 tickets at
$27.00 per ticket. It may be possible to sell tickets you are unable to use / purchase more
tickets at our parent meeting on April 11.
We are also planning to host an omelet breakfast, details to be announced. Thank you for
your support.

WAIVER and CONSENT (please print this page)
I, the parent or legal guardian of the above named player, herby gives my approval for this player to
participate in any and all baseball activities.
I know that baseball may result in serious injuries, and that protective equipment does not prevent all
injuries to a player, and I do hereby waive, release, absolve, indemnify, and agree to hold harmless the
Whitehawk Youth Baseball Association and its board members, the coaches and assistant coaches, umpires,
other players and their guardians and relatives, the organizer, the league, sponsors, supervisors, field owners
and operators, and participants for any claim arising out of any injury to my child whether the result of
negligence or for any other cause.
I understand that no refunds of registration fees will be given after the clinics commence, except that
a player who moves away from the area or sustains a season-ending injury before the beginning of the
regular season may receive a partial refund at the discretion of the WYBA board and except that any player
who is unable to play because a coach could not be recruited for a team will be given a full refund of the
registration fee.

Try-outs: Weather permitting, player try-outs/evaluations will take place at the WRA fields in
Minnetrista on April 2 or April 9. If necessary due to weather constraints, try-outs will be conducted at
MWHS. Players will also be evaluated at player clinics. Players will be evaluated on fielding, throwing,
hitting, base running, pitching/catching (if applicable) and player hustle and attitude.
Spring School Baseball: Mound Westonka offers baseball for grades 7 – 12. The fee for spring
baseball is the activity fee:$95.00 (7th /8th grade) $125.00 (9th-12th) payable to ISD 277. See the Westonka
school website for more info.
Summer Traveling Baseball: Practices begin mid-April. The number of practices per week and
times will be determined by coaches. Tournament play usually goes into mid-July. Home games and
practices will take place at WRA, MWHS or St. Boni fields.
There is some unavoidable overlap of games at the end of the spring school season and the
beginning of the summer season. We work very closely with the high school and do
everything we can to avoid conflict between the two schedules although sometimes Mother
Nature does not cooperate and forces us to change our plans. We hope you consider both
spring baseball and summer baseball.
A note about bats from varsity baseball coach, Jeff Peterson:
As most of you may know we have new baseball bat standards for this year and again for
next year. I was just in Iowa at the coaches clinic down there and heard from a person who is
with the NFHS. I want everyone to be aware that some of the old bats are illegal.
The link listed here is the link from WSU where the bats have been tested and made legal or
illegal. The NFHS has a link to newly approved bats at www.nfhs.org and they will keep that
one updated with pics of only the composite that are legal.
