Tryout Information

Tryouts will be at WRA on April 17th 2011. The 16 year old tryouts will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at or before 2 p.m. The younger wyba player tryouts will start immediately after the conclusion of the 16 year olds.

Tryouts process - Each player must go through the tryout process every year. Qualifying for a specific team one year does not necessarily mean that player will be placed with the same team in following years. The coaches need to assess every player to properly place the player at a particular age and ability level.

The tryout process

1. Weather permitting, tryouts are scheduled to occur outside on a baseball field properly sized for the age group. Field sizes are different depending on the age of the player.

2. Evaluators are selected with minimal knowledge of the players abilities or histories. For example coaches at the 16 year old level may evaluate players for 13 and 14 year olds.

3. Players will be placed into groups and will move between multiple stations. They will be asked to hit, throw, field, pitch , catch, and run. The player will be scored based on their abilities at each of these skills. They will also be observed for hustle and attitude.

4. Scoring is done in the most objective way possible. Strength, speed, accuracy, hand/eye coordination, and knowledge of positioning are examples of evaluation criteria.

5. When the player has attended all tryout stations the scoring sheets are passed on to the coaches for that particular level and discussions occur between the evaluators and coaches.

6. Players may be asked to return to the tryout location a second time to evaluate the players in a game situation. This is a choice of the coaches for that particular level.

Team selection The coaches will use the tryout process as a major input to place players on teams that fit their skills. This is not the only criteria that is considered. Tactical understanding of the game, good attitude, attention and listening skills are considered in team selection. In addition, the player's and parents' commitment, attendance, and attitude displayed in past seasons may be taken into account.
